Online Advertising Solutions

When doing business, either online, or off, advertising is an obvious must. Without sufficient advertising, your business will not survive, because the customers you are trying to sell to will not know about you and what you have to offer them. You cannot just build a web site and expect to create sales without advertising it.

Here we will examine different methods of advertising online. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and not all methods work well for every type of business. By the time you have finished with this page, you should have a good idea of which online advertising applications will work best for your business.

FREE ADVERTISING

On the net, there are thousands of free advertising opportunities. And while free is nice, it is not always the most effective. It is not always free either. That is to say, that most forms of free advertising online requires some sort of a trade off. It many not cost you in actual dollars, but typically, you must perform some sort of action (surfing, setting your start page, subscriptions, etc..), to obtain advertising credit. While this is not a bad thing, it can become time consuming if you choose to utilize these types of programs.

The best way to generate free advertising credit with programs, such as those described above, is to promote the programs, building a downline in them, using your downine members for credit accural. The catch 22 of it is that you now have more programs to promote, aside from your actual business.

Most, if not all, free advertising programs offer a paid membership upgrade option, or the ability to purchase advertising credits. However, this turns your free advertising program into a paid one. Most people upgrade these services to either get more advertising credits, or avoid having to do what is required to get free credits. Finally, most of these programs will pay upgraded members for referring other paid members, which is another motivator for upgrading your membership.

When it comes to advertising online, you get what you pay for. Nothing is truly free, but you can come pretty close.

Some free advertising options are:
  • classified ads
  • traffic exchanges
  • banner exchanges
  • start page programs
  • safe lists
  • ezine advertising
  • affiliate ad programs (ex: FreeAd Depot)
  • directory listings
  • search engine submission
  • press releases

PAID ADVERTISING

When you pay for advertising, you usually see better results. The reason for this is that you end up driving more traffic to your web site, and depending on the method used, the traffic you receive is more targeted to your market.

Targeting your traffic is critical. Random traffic is less likely to generate sales than targeted traffic. The reason for this is because when you target your traffic, you are putting your web site in front of people who are actually looking for your product or service.

Paying for advertising does not have to be expensive. As with anything else, you just need to shop around.

All of the methods of advertising listed above, offer paid advertising options. You should investigate these types of programs to find which ones best suit your needs.

Additional Paid Advertising Methods:

pay-per-click search engines
pay-per-click contextual ads (ex: Google AdSense)
ezine solo & sponsorship advertising

SELLING ADVERTISING

Another way to generate income from your web site is to sell advertising space to others. This is a fairly simple thing to set up. Just allot a specific space on your web page that you are willing to devote to selling advertising to others.

  • determine the price for the ad space
  • determine the length of time the ads will run
  • add your ad criteria to the page (restrictions, etc.)
  • make a space on the page where the ads will be placed
  • create a payment button
  • That's all there is to it.

Another way you can generate income from your web site is to participate in contextual ad programs like Google AdSense.

With these programs, you can specify the type of ads to be run on your pages, and you can also customize the look of the ad block. It is very easy to participate; just paste the code provided by the program, into your web page, where you want it to be located, and each time someone clicks on a link in the ad block, you earn a commission. Pretty simple.

VIRAL ADVERTISING

Viral advertising is an extremely effective form of advertising. The most popular form of viral advertising is done with ebooks.

  • create your own ebook (special software required)
  • obtain brandable ebooks from others

If you are a proficient writer, you should consider writing your own ebook, focused on your industry (business). You should write about the problem that your business is the solution to. Mention your business, link to it, and add your contact information to it.

The next step is to GIVE IT AWAY! Everyone loves free stuff. Give it away as a gift for visiting your web site. Advertise your free book. And, allow others to give it away too.

You can also allow others to brand your book. This is something you can do for free, or you can even charge a small fee for branding rights.

As with writing your own brandable ebooks, you can look for and obtain the branding rights to other authors' work. Give these away, and you'll be spreading your information to others, like a virus. Hence the term, viral advertising.

VIRAL ADVERTISING WITH RSS

RSS is a technology that was designed for writers/ publishers. The reason that it is such a powerful advertising tool is because of the ability that RSS feeds have to be syndicated. That is to say that, a feed publisher can allow other webmasters to use the feed content on their own web sites. Webmasters need content, feed publishers have it. In this way, feed publishers can leverage the traffic other other web sites.

Syndicating content is similar to link trading on steriods.

Think about columnists like Dear Abby, Dave Barry, etc., they reach millions of readers because their articles are syndicated in hundreds of newspapers. Garfield, The Peanuts, Blondie, and other comic strip characters owe their fame to syndication.

If you can write good articles, or reprint the work of others, you have the makings of an RSS feed. Feeds are all about content. Informative articles will draw readers, and readers can be turned into customers. The more web sites you can syndicate your feed on, the more readers you will reach, multiplying your effort exponentially.

Using a third party system is recommended for those who want to create and manage multiple feeds, or have little technical knowledge in this area. Installing an RSS feed on your own server does require some technical knowledge.

More on using articles for advertising:

If you are a proficient writer, you should use this to your advantage in advertising. There is no better way to make an emotional connection with your reader, and potential customer, than through article writing. No other medium affords you the amount of words needed to make this connection.

When you write articles, you demonstrate your expertise in your topic. You also let the reader know that you really understand their need, or want, and that you can help them with it. This creates a sense of trust, which is something needed for making a customer.

If you are not handy with words, you can always find someone to write for you. Ghostwriters are easily found through sites like: AdsOnQ, or elance.com; or by Googling the key terms, copywriters, ghostwriters, and freelance writers.

When I say write an article, I don't mean a solo ad. Blatant advertising will not impress your reader. Give them informational content. And... write an article, not a to-do list. Do your advertising in the author's resource box, at the end of the piece.

Example:

About the Author: Trina L.C. Sonnenberg
Publisher of the Trii-Zine Ezine, an Internet marketing and home based business resource publication. http://www.ezines1.com/triizine

Another benefit to writing articles is submiting them to article directories, for free. When you have your work included in article directories, you are giving permission for others to reprint your work. Being your copyrighted material, the person reprinting it must maintain your resource box and contact information.

A Quick Word About Press Releases:

A press release is a news piece, not a typical article. Press releases must answer the 4 W's.... Who, What, Where, Why. If you even hint at a sales pitch, you will be rejected. Also... Never write a press release in the first person; it must be in the third person perspective.

LIST BUILDING

List building is another very important aspect to marketing your business, and ties in closely with advertising. Through your advertising, you should be building a contact list.

This is done by using incentives in your advertising. Incentives draw people to your web site, and when delivering on your incentive, you must collect your visitor's contact information.

Never just hand out a download link; require that either a form be filled out, or send them to an autoresponder that sends out the link when triggered. Each time you do this, you add another name to your contact list.

Learning to build a contact list is not enough. You have to know what to do with your list as it grows, and how to keep people from unsubscribing.

There are several programs available on the net, that teach these techniques; how to build a list, clean a list, maintain a list, and how to send email to your list, so that you don't become an annoyance to your subscribers. You want to keep them happy, so they will continue to be your customers.

Don't think that ezine owners are the only ones who need to build and maintain a list. All business owners need to do this.

Advertising your business is a constant action that you must take if you want your business to thrive. Make sure that you learn how to advertise your specific business. Not all advertising methods work for every application, so testing is a must. And, never dump all of your advertising budget into a single marketing method.

Happy Advertising!

A few words about surf and auto-surf programs: Although I have included them in these lists of services, surfing programs are not my recommended method for getting traffic. There are a couple of different reasons for my lack of enthusiasm regarding surf programs...

  1. They are too easy to cheat, making them a waste of time.
  2. They are an open door for cyber nasties like viruses, trojans, keyloggers and more.
  3. They tend to target the wrong market, unless you are promoting marketing tools to other marketers. In otherwords, surf exchangers are more often than not, sellers, not buyers.
Please feel free to read this recent article on surf programs: Life Guard NOT On Duty

I do, however, recommend banner and link exchanges for web site promotion.
